About Me.

Affectionately known as Kathy, Kathryn Harmer Fox is a celebrated fibre artist whose inventive and deeply expressive works transcend traditional mediums. Based in Kwelera Mouth in the Eastern Cape, her art reflects a profound connection to nature, people, and the human condition.

A multi-award-winning artist, Kathryn transforms fabric and thread into breath taking depictions of birds, hands, and the eyes of friends and family. Her process—“painting” with fabric—layers colour and texture with the precision of a fine artist, while her sewing machine becomes a tool for drawing, blurring the lines between stitching, sculpture, and painting.

Inspired by her mother’s love of sewing, Kathryn developed her own mastery of fibre art, creating works alive with movement and energy. Recurring motifs of birds, hands, and eyes capture her respect for nature and the expressive power of the human form.

Alongside her studio practice, Kathryn is a passionate teacher, offering workshops locally and internationally. Rather than teaching replication, she encourages her students to discover their own artistic voices through the universal language of line.

Her works have received international recognition, from exhibitions at the prestigious European Patchwork Meeting to accolades at global quilt competitions. Through her evocative creations, Kathryn continues to expand the definition of fibre art, inviting viewers to experience art as both personal and collective liberation.
