About Me.

Meet Evert Esterhuizen, a talented architect turned full-time artist based in East London. After planning a brief hiatus from the construction industry, Evert found himself immersed in the vibrant world of painting for over three years! His studio, overlooking the lush Nahoon Valley, serves as a serene backdrop for his creative journey.

Evert is primarily a self-taught artist with roots in watercolour and acrylics. He began painting while completing his Master’s degree in architecture at Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth. Inspired by the unique mantra of creative icon Iris Apfel—“More is more and less is a bore”—Evert embraces fearless exploration through intuitive mark-making.

Evert's artistic inspiration draws deeply from the extraordinary vegetation of South Africa’s far Eastern regions, especially the lush Transkei coastline he grew up exploring. The vivid landscapes and layered natural scenery have profoundly influenced his view of the world as rich in complex patterns and contrasting colours, a theme that resonates through his vibrant artwork.

One of Evert's standout techniques is his use of silhouettes, a powerful approach he discovered during his architectural studies. He captures emotions and stories that are universally identifiable through body language, offering a rich yet anonymous framework for viewers. His paintings invite onlookers to project their own memories and experiences, sparking joy, reflection, and an engaging visual journey.
